Five most important defensive players in the league are….
Haloti
Ngata -he’s incredible. It’s like he’s on a mission this year to prove
that he’s the best defensive tackle in the league, and not that guy in
Detroit. He’s unblockable. He can chase down guys from behind. All his
tackles seem to be for loss when he’s playing well. Ed Reed and Ray
Lewis don’t look old yet. Well, when Ngata attracts two blockers and is
still unblockable, it’s easy to play behind him.
Vince
Wilfork - it’s hard to include him on this list when his team’s defense
has been terrible this season. However, he’s unblockable, he’s still
scarier than Suh, and he’s picking up the slack for his secondary by
getting two interceptions already. The Patriots traded Richard Seymour
and their D Line is just as good. Nuff said.
Mario
Williams - turns out the Texans were right when they picked him over Vince
Young and Reggie Bush a few years back at number one overall. And it
wasn’t even close. He is a beast. Teams don’t know what to do with the
guy. He’s 6’6” and possibly the best athlete on the defensive side of
the ball for anyone if the NFL.
Darell Revis - um, duh. Never
seen a defensive player turn a season around for a team the way Revis
did when he got two picks against Miami in week six. He didn’t even have
a great game—Brandon Marshall tore him up without even playing well
himself. But I saw the Jets swagger return for the first time, and
that’s huge. He’s everything to that team.
Ed Reed - he edges out
Demarcus Ware and Suh, partly because of nostalgia. However, he barely
played last year, and Baltimore’s offense carried the team into the
playoffs. He comes back late last season, and they go from first round
pushover to near Super Bowl participants. Their defense has been
suffocating. He’s back. When the defensive player of the year
discussion up to this point revolves around who’s been the best player
in Baltimore? , you’re pretty good.
